Safe dates, safe rides

Meeting someone new is exciting. Meeting them with horses involved means a little extra care. Here is how to do both well.

• Meet somewhere public first

  Coffee, a show, or a busy public trailhead. Save private barns and solo hacks for after you have met in person.

• Tell someone your plan

  Share who you are meeting, where, and when you expect to be back. Riders already do this before a trail ride, so do it for dates too.

• Ride within both your levels

  A first ride together should suit the less experienced rider and the less experienced horse. Be honest about your level on your profile.

• Never lend a horse on a first meeting

  Riding someone else's horse, or handing over yours, can wait until you know each other and the horses have been introduced properly.

• Keep money out of it

  Be wary of anyone who asks for money, board payments, or help buying a horse before you have met. That is a red flag.

• Trust your gut

  If something feels off, leave. You can always unmatch, and you never owe anyone a second ride.
